Couples are worried about sex during pregnancy.
Doctor may recommend not having intercourse early in pregnancy if one has a history of miscarriages. Intercourse also may be avoided if you have certain complications of pregnancy- pre-term labor or bleeding. Ask your doctor to clarify if this means no penetration, no orgasms, or no sexual arousal, as different complications may require different restrictions. Avoid vigorous intercourse. Women will not be comfortable due to breast tenderness. For some women sex desire increases while for some it decreases.
There is no reason to change your sexual activity during pregnancy unless your doctor advises. Intercourse or orgasm during pregnancy will not harm your baby, unless you have a medical problem. Baby is protected in uterus by the amniotic fluid.
Positions may need to be altered at this time as after the fourth month of pregnancy a woman may notice feeling nauseated while lying flat on her back. Lying side by side facing each other may help. This is related to the weight of the growing uterus pressing on major blood vessels. Intercourse causes rhythmic movements of pelvis which actually makes delivery of baby easier as it gives exercise to pelvic muscles.
A water-based lubricant may be used during intercourse if necessary.
During intercourse, one should not feel pain. During orgasm, your uterus will contract. If you have any contractions that are painful or regular, please contact your doctor. Also, discontinue intercourse and call your doctor immediately if you have heavy vaginal bleeding or if your water breaks (nothing should enter the vagina after your water breaks as it can cause infections).
